Give it a Whirl bloghop

Hi and welcome to day 4 and the last day of the Give it a Whirl blog hop.   This blog hop is being hosted by Carol of https://www.justletmequilt.com.

When I saw the theme I thought that sounds fun.   So I remembered a quilt a friend had asked me to quilt for her.

She made this at a retreat in 2022 and asked me to quilt it in early 2023.    She wanted circles on it, and she knew I did ruler work, so asked me if I could quilt it for her.   I said sure.  I hadn't really used my circle rulers yet, so why not.   It was fun.

I used my circles on quilts ruler from Sew Steady.   I did smaller circles and then some larger circles so they overlap.  I quilted this on my Juki tl18qvp.   I had so much fun.   I had this one quilted fast.  Probably because it was really fun.

As I was scrolling through my photos I found some other fun whirly things I have done.

I love ruler quilting and I teach it to others.   These are some designs I do with rulers.

This EPP pillow is from a class I do on English Paper Piecing.

This purple and teal quilt was quilted with loops.    It was done free motion on my Juki tl18qvp.

Thank you for joining me on my blog today.   I would love for you to follow me here as well as Facebook at www.facebook.com/kathyskwiltsandmore or  on Instagram at www.instagram.com/kathyskwiltsandmore

Check out the rest of the bloggers for this week.  I think they have had as much fun as I have had.

It Moose be Love blog hop

Welcome.  I am so glad you are here.  Today is my day on the It Moose Be Love blog hop hosted by Joan at Moosestashquilting.com.   for this month we are supposed to share about something we love.   I love to do hand work.   I have gotten into English Paper Piecing.    We retired almost 2 years ago, and I started doing more English Paper Piecing.    It is portable and I can take it with me, when we go on drives.   I have also taken it with me when we go camping.  It is just nice to be able to pick it up at times.   I can also do it as I am visiting with family or watching tv with my hubby.

I recently taught an EPP class at a retreat.   It was lots of fun.   I taught the students how to make this pillow.    I wrote the pattern for this and I made some kits.

I also enjoy hand binding.  It is really relaxing for me.  I stitch my binding to the front, fold it over and then handstitch on the back.

I also enjoy machine quilting.  I do all of my quilting on my Juki tl18qvp.   I do free motion and ruler quilting.   I also enjoy teaching these classes to others.  It is one thing I am passionate about.

I love to use a solid backing on my quilts.    I love the texture that is on the back.

Thank you for visiting my blog today. I appreciate it.

White rabbit blog hop

 Hello all,

Welcome to my day on the White Rabbit blog hop hosted by Carol @https://www.justletmequilt.com/.

The challenge was to use white in a quilt, use rabbits, or use a white rabbit.    I knew just what I was going to do.   A lot of my quilts have white in them.   I am however trying to get away from white backgrounds and go creams when I need a light background or even a light shade of other colors and black or super dark navy when I need a dark color background.  Just for a bit of variety.   What colors do you like for backgrounds?

On to the quilts.  This one, I call rectangles.  It was a fun one to make.  I put it in my county fair last year and got a blue ribbon on it. I love it.   I quilted it with an all over medium meander.

This second one has been a work in progress since 2020.    We were in the process of remodeling our home.   We wanted the master bedroom to be painted a light green.   Well, the bedroom got painted, but the quilt didn't get done in time.

In  2022 we moved, and we have 3 guest bedrooms, all with beds needing quilts.   I am still working on quilts for those beds.   The top is  done, but needs quilted.  I started quilting it, using white thread, it waa perfect on top, but I didn't like it on the green background.   So then I tried to use green in the bobbin but I had pokies coming through.

A friend, who longarms, suggested a green on top, to match my backing.   So, I finally unpicked the quilting I had done (about 1/2) and think I will quilt with green.

Have you ever quilted with a contrast color?  I would love to hear your suggestions.

I appreciate you reading my blog.   I would love to hear your answers to the 2 questions I asked.

Summer scrap elimination

It is that time of year to go through and use up some of those scraps.     I was so glad when Swan @ swanamity.com  invited me to join in on this.   I just went to a class last week where we talked about some scrap organizing, so I will be sharing some ideas with you.

Every quilter ends up with scraps, right?   And it can be hard to throw them away, especially since you know what fabric costs.

A few years ago I came across a really good site for using scraps and this lady has a system set up called the scrap users system.  You can read more about it at www.quiltville.blogspot.com.  Bonnie has a wonderful system and she even has free patterns available that uses scraps.  Through following Bonnie she has taught me that it is okay to even have your background scrappy.

The project I am sharing with you today is a spider web block.   For this one I like to use scraps that are up to about 2 inches wide.

So, here is what you need:

A stack of 9 1/2" blocks.  I used whites on mine and I didn't worry about all of them matching.

A pile of scraps.  You can go super scrappy or more controlled scrappy.   The blocks I am working with today, are a bit more matchy in that I have just 2 color families.  I use anywhere from 1 inch to 2 1/2" scraps for these.

So, the first thing you are going to do is cut your 9 1/2" squares in half on the diagonal.

Then mark  3" in from the center of the top and right on the center of the bottom.

I don't necessarily measure my strips.  I just grab them and sew and trim after a few blocks are stitched.

Next you will begin sewing your strips.   I usually do a few blocks at a time.  I stitch my first scrap strip to my marked lines, right side together, so that my seam is on my markings.    I use a 1/4" seam.

Then I go to the pressing mat and I press the strips so the right side shows.

Next I stitch my next piece to the one I just stitched,  right sides together.

I press after I get each strip sewn on.    You could also finger press or use this handy tool.    I got this at a local retreat from a company called Westenskow and sons.

After my first side of my triangle is done, then I repeat on the second side.  I then trim all of my pieces even.

I then start sewing them together, so my tops of the triangles will point at the center.    I stitch 4 of these together.

That makes one block.

I hope you will try this.   It is a fun way to use up your scraps.   If you are interested in a class on how to make these, let me know.  We would do it online, maybe zoom, and there would be a nominal charge.   I would love to see your project if you do this so tag me on Instagram and Facebook at kathyskwiltsandmore.

Twist and turn bloghop

 Hi readers,

Today is my day to share an exciting new book with you.    This book is all about circle designs.

Twist & Turn Quilts by Cinzia White published by C&T Publishing is landing in stores this month. I have joined with a group of exciting original designers to bring you more ideas on how to meld different designs to make your own original quilt. These innovative designers are showing you a variety of their own circle designs using the latest fabrics to highlight the versatility of Cinzia’s Twist & Turn Quilts.

I have been working on a design, although I am not as far along as I would like to be.

As I have read through a draft of the book, I have found some really fun designs.

When Cinzia put out a call for this blog hop, she said a project could be made or a designer could recolor it in one of their fabric lines.  I don't have a fabric line, so I decided to start working on a project.

This is the inspiration for the project I have been working on

I have a hand embroidery design that I will be putting in the circles.

These are a couple of other fun designs in the book

So, how do you get a copy of this book?

Check your local quilt shop, it is published by C&T publishing, or you can enter to win an ebook by leaving a comment on my blog or my Instagram  www.instagram.com/kathyskwiltsandmore or Facebook www.facebook.com/kathyskwiltsandmore.     I will close this giveaway on June 3 at midnight Mountain Time.
